Revenge trading: how to spot it and how to stop

A loss stings, and the fastest way to make it stop is to win it back right now. That urge, acted on, is revenge trading, and it turns one bad trade into a bad day.

What it looks like

  • Entering again within minutes of a loss, often in the same coin.
  • A bigger position or higher leverage than usual, “to get it back faster”.
  • Trades that don't match your plan, or no plan at all.
  • Moving or removing a stop-loss because “it has to turn”.
  • Losing track of how many trades you've made today.

Why it happens

Losses feel stronger than gains of the same size, and a fresh loss makes the next decision more emotional, not less. The decision to stop has to be made by the same person who is frustrated. That's why rules decided in advance work better than willpower in the moment.

Rules that help

  • A cooldown after every loss. 10 to 30 minutes away from the screen before the next entry. The urge usually fades faster than you expect.
  • A maximum number of trades per day. It caps the damage on the days you're not at your best.
  • A daily loss limit. Once it's hit, you're done until tomorrow.
  • Fixed position size. Decide the size before the session and don't raise it after a loss.
  • One written rule in plain sight, like “no entry without a stop-loss”.

Making the rules visible

Rules kept in a notebook are easy to forget in the moment. With a read-only Binance Futures key connected, Traders Window keeps them on screen: a countdown starts after each losing trade, closes are counted against your daily maximum, a bar fills toward your loss limit and turns the frame red when you reach it, and your rule of the day stays in view.

It can't stop you from trading, because a read-only key can't place or block orders. It makes breaking your own rules a conscious choice instead of a reflex.

Set it up in Settings → Account → Discipline: cooldown after a loss, max closes per day, daily loss limit and rule of the day.
