What altcoin season means
Most of the time, Bitcoin leads and altcoins follow, with bigger swings both ways. In an altcoin season, money rotates into altcoins and most of them rise faster than Bitcoin for weeks or months. In a Bitcoin season, Bitcoin holds up better and most altcoins lose ground against it.

How this index is calculated
- Take the largest cryptocurrencies by market value from CoinPaprika, without Bitcoin, stablecoins, gold tokens and wrapped or staked versions of other coins.
- Keep the first 50 that trade against USDT on Binance with at least 90 days of history.
- Compare each coin's price change over the last 90 days with Bitcoin's.
- The index is the share that did better, from 0 to 100.
This follows the widely used definition of the altcoin season index. Because the coin list and the price source differ slightly between sites, the value here can differ by a few points from other versions.
Bitcoin dominance
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market value. A falling dominance while Bitcoin rises is the classic setup for altcoin season; a rising dominance while everything falls means money is retreating to Bitcoin. More in Bitcoin dominance explained.

The live index is at the top of this page. It's altcoin season when at least 75% of the top 50 altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over the last 90 days, and Bitcoin season when 25% or fewer have.
How is the altcoin season index calculated?
Take the 50 largest cryptocurrencies by market value, leaving out Bitcoin, stablecoins and wrapped or staked tokens. Compare each one's 90-day price change with Bitcoin's. The index is the percentage that did better.
What is Bitcoin dominance today?
It's shown live on this page: Bitcoin's market value divided by the value of the whole crypto market. Different data providers count coins differently, so the figure can differ by a few points between sites.
