What the index measures
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is published once a day by alternative.me, which also provides the data on this page. It combines volatility, momentum and volume, social media, Bitcoin dominance and Google search trends into a number from 0 to 100. What goes into it, and its limits, are explained in the Fear & Greed Index explained.
| Value | Label |
|---|---|
| 0–25 | Extreme fear |
| 26–46 | Fear |
| 47–54 | Neutral |
| 55–75 | Greed |
| 76–100 | Extreme greed |
The labels are the ones alternative.me publishes with each value; the ranges are what they have used since 2018.
How to use the history table
The table answers a simple question with real data: when the market was this fearful or this greedy, what did Bitcoin do in the following weeks? The answer often surprises people: buying extreme fear has not been the clear winner the saying suggests, and extreme greed has often come in the middle of strong uptrends rather than at their top. It's calculated in your browser from the full index history and Bitcoin's daily closing prices on Binance. Averages include very different years, and a single case can go badly against the average. Treat it as context, not as a signal.

Questions
What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index today?
The live value is at the top of this page. It's published once a day by alternative.me on a scale from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed).
Is extreme fear a good time to buy Bitcoin?
Not reliably. The popular idea is to buy extreme fear and sell extreme greed, but in the daily data since 2018 Bitcoin's average return in the 30 days after extreme greed has been higher than after extreme fear, because strong trends tend to keep going. The history table on this page recalculates this live. Averages hide big losses in individual cases, and past results don't guarantee anything.
How often is the Fear and Greed Index updated?
Once a day, around 00:00 UTC. It doesn't react to moves within the day.
