Menu bar crypto ticker or floating widget: which one to use
Both keep a price in view while you work. They're good at different things, and the right one depends on how actively you trade.
Menu bar tickers
A menu bar ticker puts a price next to the clock. There are many, several of them free.
- Good at: staying out of the way, and showing one or two prices at a glance.
- Limits: very little space, so there's no room for context like funding or liquidations. Many refresh from aggregators every 30 seconds to several minutes. The menu bar hides in full-screen apps.
- Best for: holders who check prices occasionally.
Floating widgets
A floating widget is a small window that stays on top of your other apps.
- Good at: showing more per coin, reacting fast, and making alerts impossible to miss because they happen where you're looking.
- Limits: it takes some screen space, and a poorly made one gets in the way. Most can't stay on top of full-screen apps.
- Best for: active traders, especially of futures.
Side by side
| Typical menu bar ticker | Traders Window | |
|---|---|---|
| Price updates | often 30 s to minutes | about once a second, from Binance |
| Over full-screen apps | hidden | stays visible |
| Futures data | rarely | funding, open interest, liquidations, order flow |
| Alerts | system notification, if any | pulsing frame, repeating sound, phone |
| Screen space | none | 250 px wide; compact and ghost modes |
| Price | free to a few dollars | free |
If you only glance at prices a few times a day, a menu bar ticker is enough. If you trade and need to react, a floating widget earns its space.
